Hello. My name is Tolu Olasoji.
At the moment, I work on the digital operations team at GZERO Media; strategizing, publishing, and pulling eyeballs to its quality geopolitical coverage (and commentary) across several digital platforms at Eurasia Group’s news media outfit.
I’m a writer, reporter, editor, photojournalist, and digital and TV producer with close to a decade of experience covering a variety of topics, including sports, solutions, business, technology, culture, policy, social issues, geopolitics, and news in general, mainly focusing on their intersections with people. My varying interests, skills, and experience mean I’m willing to go wherever the story leads.
Recently, I was a contributing editor at David Byrne’s solutions-focused platform Reasons to be Cheerful (RTBC) and a Lagos-based contributor to the business publication Quartz, writing about technology, innovation, policy, and its impact on people, business, and the economy in Africa, as well as the co-curator of its weekly newsletter.
I love newsletters. And I have been involved in one way or another for the past couple of years. In 2021, I ghostwrote a popular tech newsletter hosted and featured several times on Get Revue, Twitter’s newsletter product. And for RTBC, I was occasionally in the inboxes of its global audience, talking about solutions to societal problems worldwide.
As a freelance reporter, my work has appeared in Mail and Guardian, VICE, Al Jazeera, New Frame, Mundial Mag, FourFourTwo UK, Washington Post, and more. I have been featured on platforms like CNN, CSIS, and New Frame to provide commentary on issues like sports, technology, and social justice.
My impactful story on football trafficking for Al Jazeera in 2019 was named the best color piece in Africa (top 10 in the world) by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS). In addition, my report on a group turning religious leaders into LGBTQ+ allies in Mombasa, a coastal town in Kenya, was chosen as one of the favorite Solutions Journalism stories of 2021 by the Solutions Journalism Network.
Until May 2019, I worked as GOAL Nigeria's deputy editor and audience engagement manager. I also led its newsroom’s effort as editor-in-chief and content strategist (for commercials) during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
I have a Master's degree in journalism from West Virginia University, where I won an Emmy award for a TV news production on addiction in America. In February 2023, I won the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Scholarship, awarded to two promising broadcast students in West Virginia and Virginia colleges. In grad school, I focused on journalism ethics, and digital and TV production.
Kindly reach out to me via email: tollexsoji@gmail.com. Let's discuss my next commission, your controversial stance on the Oxford commas, and/or how much you love or hate sports. Trust me; I can relate!
